The Premier Poll
The Premier Poll is a poll not about wins, losses, or strength of schedule. The Premier Poll asks something different: How good is this team really? This poll is built to reflect the way coaches, Vegas, and the fans really feel about a team. This is similar to a power ranking, but not the same. Our goal is to capture the appropriate feel of each team on a given week.
This also isn't a résumé ranking, and it's not a projection of who deserves a playoff spot. It's an attempt to measure true competitive caliber, independent of how a team's record looks on paper.
Records can be misleading. A loaded team can drop one or two early games and get buried by traditional polls while coaches and oddsmakers still see them as a top-10 threat, not a 20th-ranked afterthought. The Premier Poll is built to reflect that.
Early in the season, the formula weighs raw team strength heavily. As the season goes on, it gradually shifts toward the metrics that matter for playoff positioning — evolving with the stakes, without trying to be a playoff ranking itself.
Rankings can also move for any justified reason — momentum, an X-factor player (or the injury of one), a shift in how the sport views a program — because this poll isn't locked into preseason assumptions.
